Iridium FAQ I own an Iridium Motorola 9500: do I have to upgrade it or can I use it? No, your Iridium Motorola 9500 works without any modification. You do not have to buy any extra accessory. You just have to subscribe to the new service, by opening an 8816 Iridium line with us. Only if you want to use it for data transmission, you need to upgrade the firmware of your phone. Can I keep my previous Iridium line and activate it with you? No, your old Iridium SIM card is not good anymore, you must open a brand new line with us: a new SIM card will be sent to you, and you will have a brand new Irdiium line. SMS: May I receive SMS? Yes; the maximum length is 120 characters.SMS:: May I send SMS? No it is not yet possible. Sending SMS is scheduled for the end of 2001.SMS: May I use my cellular phone to send an SMS? No, you must connect to Iridium web site, www.iridium.com, to send an SMS.May I subscribe to a temporary service, that I can reactivate when I need it? No, it is not possible.May I use a GSM SIM card enabled to Iridium roaming?No, you must open an full Iridium line. May I use the Motorola 9505, a multi-mode phone, which can work on GSM networks as well, with a GSM SIM card? Theoretically yes, unless the 9505 has been SIM blocked to use Iridium SIM cards only. As fare as we know, all new Iridium phones will be SIM -locked.Do I pay the phone calls I receive? No, you do not, only he who calls you pays for the call. May I use an Iridium phone at the North or South poles? Yes, the coverage is global. Are the 66 satellites all available for the Iridium service? Yes, they are all available, and in addition there are 7 spare ones, that can be utilized in case of emergency. There are 8 more satellites currently under preparation for launch in the course of the year 2001. What about all the news that said that the satellites were been burned out in the course of their de-orbiting? These news were not true, all satellites are up and working, perfectly. May I buy from you accessories that I can use with the phones I was using before? Yes, they are available. No.What is the meaning of refurbished? It refers to equipment that was returned to Motorola and that was completely tested and repaired; if damaged. broken parts were replaced as well as the external case. They can be considered as new phones. The warranty on these refurbished phones is considered out of box: if within a reasonable amount of time, 20 days from date of purchase, we do not get any negative feed-back on the refurbished equipment, we will not be able to replace it/repair under warranty.How many messages can I receive in the pager? 99 messagesWhat about if I miss any message? Can I make my own cable to install a remote antenna? In theory YES, as most connectors are standard; cable are special, to limit signal loss, but they can also be found on the market. The problem is instead due to a couple of connectors that are proprietary, and that cannot be purchased on the market, nor they can be purchased separately from Iridium/Motorola; thus, the whole kit, cable and connectors must be purchased.If I loose my SIM card, can it be replaced, and can I keep my numbers? Yes, it can be replaced, at a cost, pls check pricelist, and yuo can maintain the same numbers. Data TX: Is data transmission available? Yes, at 2400bps. At the end of 2001, speed will increase to 9600bps. Your phone must be data ready: if you buy a brand new phone now, it will be data ready already, but if you plan to use an Iridium phone that you had used with the former Iridium, you will have to update the software.Data TX: do I have to pay an activation or an annual fee? Yes.Data TX: can I use the data tx module and the battery charger at the same time? Yes, you may by installing them at the same time. Is there a specific application that must be used? No, they must be upgraded.Are new Iridium phones data capable? Yes, they are. Data transmission: if I open a line for voice only, and only later on I decide to activate data tx, do I have to change SIM card? No, the same card is still valid, we will have to enable it for data tx, but you will not have to return it, it is all automatic. Will you issue a new data number, in addition to the voice one? Yes, a new data number will be issued, so that you will have two numbers: one for voice and one for data. I use Linux OS, can I use an Iridium dial out? Yes, you may, as long as yr OS supports AT commands, or if develop specific AT commands for the Iridium phone.Are the dial-up and direct-internet connections available using an Iridium phone? As you know, there are two types of data services -- dial-up and direct-internet. The direct-internet client software only runs in a Windows environment. Dial-up data can be used in any operational system, though some efforts may be required to work out the interfaces. The Iridium Unit simply appears as an external modem that can be controlled via AT commands, so there shouldn't be any problems. The modem driver/application, Apollo, that is included on the data services CD is designed for a Windows environment. However, you should be able to adapt that to Linux or any other OS. (Since Windows is still based on DOS, we would expect the modem driver could be used in DOS. In fact, if communicating directly through the COM port with AT commands, the modem driver is unnecessary).STU-III Encryption protocol: is it available on Iridium? The latest information on the Iridium network regarding encryption is that the STU III Gateway is open to US Gov. and to Defense departments of the U.K., Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Can I use my SIM card in another phone, different from the one I registered with the SIM card? The Imei is different. Yes, you may, just change phone and replace the SIM card. Is the antenna unit for satellite call of the Motorola 9500/9505 detachable and can be replaced with ordinary GSM antenna and shift its mode to GSM when service is available? Yes, the antenna is detacheable, but even if you were able to connect another antenna, the phone would not work. The iridium system is ONLY satellite, no GSM roaming anymore. It has been conceived, in its new life, to be a satellite ONLY system. Fixed mast antenna: is it the one for use for maritime purpose? Yes, the fixed mast antenna is for maritime purpose. How long can you extend the antenna? The antenna cannot be extended, as it has been built to be a fixed antenna, and as iridium phones use a omnidirectional antenna, there is no need to extend it or to position it. Is the 10m cable the maximum cable you can extend for fixed mast antenna? The 10m cable is the max length you can buy as a standard, but longer cable can be requested. Of course, if you are capable of finding these cables and standard connectors, you can make up yr cables yourself. How long is thedata cable from 9500/9505 to Data module? The cable is 1m long but eh module is applied to the bottom of the phone, and the data cable goes from the mdule to the RS232 port of your computer.Do you have any rental units? Yes, we do have rental units, but it would make no sense to ship to your country, unless you are lcoated in Europe. When shipping out of the EU, you must pay for import duties, and similar levies, that make it uneconomical to rent. Also, do you have any prepaid card for use on Iridium phones instead of post paid subscription plan? No, prepaid cards are not available; if they will ever be in the future, we will advise you immediately, if you have registered with us. According to your Call rate, subscription fees table, the subscriber have to pay one year advance payment of US$ 300.00 for voice and US$ 120.00 for data. If I have made any advance payment for voice, can I use it for data as well or vice versa since I see the cost of call for voice and data is just the same? Data and voice work on two separate channels, so if you need to send data, we need to activate yr SIM card for data as well. A new data number will be given to you, in addition to yr initial voice number. Is your data transmission module like a modem to be connected to a motorola 9500? Not really. The Data tx module is a small box which allows a RS 232 connection, which is not available in the Motorola phones otherwise. Do you have any email software which works for the IRIDIUM phone? Any email software will work with iridium phones. Our customer use email with their Inmarsat phones. Most likely, they want that kind of service at IRIDIUM in case they get one. The same way they do it now with Inmarsat, they can do it with Iridium. Of course they will have to set the DUN connection to be configured on Iridium, instead of Inmarsat. Is the 10K data rate already in place? The 10K speed will be available later in october/november 2001. Right now speed is at 2400bps, just like Inmarsat mini-M. ACeS is a satellite phone but the area coverage is in Asia only. The phone they are using is priced US$ 800.00 here in the Philippines while the airtime is US$ 0.98/min IDD call. I receive information that they are now lowering their airtime charges. The problem also with ACeS is they don't have data transmission capability. Thuraya works based on the same concept, but covering the Middle East, as there is only 1 satellite. Yes, we know Thuraya and ACeS, and we know that they are a regional system, do not have data tx capability and do not work all over the world, as Iridium does. Will the cost of 10k bps service be the same per minute? We have no indications that it will cost more, data speed is charged as voice calls. The Eurocom fixed mast antenna: is this antenna exclusive for Europe area and cannot be used for other area? No, the antenna can be used anywhere in the world. What is the line deposit of US$ 500.00 for? It is for airtime charge advance deposit and it s subject to revision depending on monthly line usage. This deposit is not used to pay for monthly bills, it is not an advance payment. When customer makes calls, we issue an invoice whic is due in full. If customer makes many calls, we bill all these calls and might ask him to revise the deposit amount, based on the amount of calls he makes. How about if the user was not able to consume the advance payment? Deposit is not an advance payment. Deposit is returned once the line is closed. At this point, the line cannot be used anymore.
